The mysteries of Holy Mass have been revealed in a detailed educational presentation by Reverend Ashur Lazar, Cor Bishop at St. Hurmizd Cathedral. The event, which took place on 6 June, was aimed at explaining the core beliefs and practices of the Holy Apostolic and Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, including the role of the clergy, the reasons for celebrating the Holy Eucharist (Qurbana Qadisha) and who benefits from it. Hundreds of encouraged and interested faithful of all ages attended, looking on as the clergy guided them in understanding the orders of the Liturgical Mass. Rev. Ashur opened the presentation with the traditional meaning behind the clergy's dress, explaining that a Deacon’s white robe represents angelic purity. When ordained a priest, the Deacon's (Oorarah), a red sash worn across the shoulder, is then placed around the neck to symbolise the escalation of responsibility.
Delving further into a step-by-step illustration, Rev. Ashur then explained the ritual behind the making of dough for Holy Communion (Gwilta); how Holy Mass commemorates the life, death, resurrection and prophesy of Christ; and the rituals that take place behind the closed veil on the Holy Altar.
The meaning behind the use of incense (Bisma) was also cleared up, with Rev. Ashur explaining the act symbolises prayers ascending to God. He dismissed the myth that the aroma cleanses evil.
The presentation was followed by a public question-and-answer session, where church members took the opportunity to have their queries and concerns openly debated and clarified.
Rev. Ashur said the explanation of Holy Mass was the first in a planned series of educational presentations for members of the Assyrian Church of the East, with future events expected to be organised for topics including the explanation of the marriage ceremony and Baptism.
